Solar Power Generating Systems

Off-Grid or Standalone Solar Power System

A stand-alone solar power system, also known as off-grid solar power system, is an off-the-grid electricity system for locations that are not fitted with an electricity distribution system. Typical SAPS include one or more methods of electricity generation, energy storage, and regulation. Stand-alone solar power systems are independent of the utility grid.

Storage is typically implemented as a battery bank, but other solutions exist including fuel cells. Power drawn directly from the battery will be direct current extra low voltage, and this is used especially for lighting as well as for DC appliances. An inverter is used to generate AC low voltage, which more typical appliances can be used with.

Grid Connected Solar Power System

A grid-connected Solar power plant is an electricity generating solar PV power system that is connected to the utility grid. A grid-connected solar power plant consists of solar panels and one or several inverters. They range from small residential and commercial rooftop systems to large utility-scale solar power stations. Unlike stand-alone solar power systems, a grid-connected solar power system rarely includes an integrated battery solution, as they are still very expensive. When conditions are right, the grid-connected solar power system supplies the excess power, beyond consumption by the connected load, to the utility grid.

Hybrid Solar Power System

A hybrid solar power System is combined of above two systems. It will use solar power when the sun is available. It will also charge the battery and in the absence of grid-connected power, it will use the battery power as the source of power. But the cost of such system will be more and it will effect the overall payback period of the project.

System Components

  1. Solar panels converts the solar energy into electricity in DC form.
  2. DC current generated by solar panels is converted into AC current by DC-to-AC solar inverter.
  3. Generated power is measured by solar meter before going to to electrical panel.
  4. AC current generated by solar power is then merged with he grid load at main electrical panel.
  5. To-and-fro current is measure by net meter in two separate readings.
    1.  Any access solar power generation not used by the housing load that is going to the grid (export) and
    2. Supply from the grid (import) when solar power is not available.
  6. Utility grid which supplies the electricity and takes back the access solar power generation. (Torrent power or DGVCL)

Grid Connected Solar Power System

The diagram above represents the line diagram of a grid connected solar power system.

It Typically involves 6 basic components .

Current flow in different conditions

Solar power generation is less than required load

Additional power requirement is supplied by the grid.
Some power is imported.
No export.
During Daytime condition -1

Solar power generation is more than required load

Access solar power generation is fed back to the grid.
Power is exported.
No import.
Daytime condition – 2

When solar power is not available

All the power is imported from the utility grid.

Like normal condition without any solar power plant.

No export.

All import.

Night or evening condition.
